Guidelines for CNCS Grantee & Sponsor Employees

As we work to advocate for national and community service, we must be mindful of how critical it is to keep any political and advocacy activities completely separate from federal grant activities.

Even if your organization receives federal funds, it is allowed to participate in ServeNext activities. Your organization does not give up constitutional rights to participate in the political and legislative process just because it receives a federal grant. But it absolutely critical that your organization does not use federal funds for political and advocacy activities. Keep these activities completely separate and distinct from your organization's other work.

Individuals may also exercise their First Amendment rights on their own initiative, on their own time, and using non-Corporation funds and resources.

Below is a Memo from CNCS General Council Wilsie Minor that goes over the do’s and don’ts of engaging in advocacy for national service. In addition, it provides answers to some frequently asked questions.
